NYC Mayor Vows Stricter Reckless Driver Enforcement

There’s a new administration in town in NYC, and one of the big priorities of incoming Mayor Bill De Blasio is to put further restrictions on drivers to reduce reckless driving within the city. Reports from the Gothamist last month show changes in local traffic administration, combined with petitioning for some lower speed limits and a new technological program to crack down on traffic offenses within the five boroughs.

Vision Zero

The city administration has also built a ‘Vision Zero’ web site that further details De Blasio’s plans to protect New York City families.

“This status quo is unacceptable.” reads the letter. “The city of New York must no longer regard traffic crashes as mere accidents, but rather, as preventable incidents that can be systematically addressed.”

To this end, the site chronicles the mindset behind Vision Zero and a range of planning steps that will help to lower the rates of various kinds of reckless driving offenses. These involve items like the following:

  • increased enforcement for violations such as failing to yield, ignoring signs and improper cell phone use
  • new speed detection equipment
  • better data capture for traffic collision information
  • new slower traffic zones
  • more speed bumps in some neighborhoods
  • better street lighting
  • public anti-drunk driving campaigns

All of these are going to have a combined effect on traffic safety within the New York City area. Safety advocates applaud projects like these that get to the roots of traffic safety issues, and make public citizens less vulnerable to harm.

New York City Car Accident Law Firm News: City Planning and Traffic Accident Risk

New proposals from Mayor De Blasio are a good example of how proactive public administration can help with the troubling challenge of vehicle and pedestrian accident rates. Attorneys at a New York City car accident law firm know how dangerous roads can be in their communities. Legal professionals understand the challenges of reducing unsafe behaviors and making roads safer for drivers and pedestrians.

In the case of the New York City proposal, the city administration is operating in an atmosphere where drivers and pedestrians are often at odds, and where massively congested roads cause a lot of practical issues for both parties. Controlling traffic and personal injury in New York City is unlike administration in less urban communities. With that in mind, most communities across the United States can benefit from forward thinking policies that move to punish unsafe actions and create a more user-friendly, safer environment for travelers.
